Information about the position 

We’re looking for a Lead Backend Engineer to join the Buyer domain. We are the central hub for finding and listing products and providing insights for optimisation. The domain connects buyers with products, optimises the shopping experience, and promotes successful transactions through a user-friendly platform with advanced search features and personalised recommendations.

We are looking for a backend engineer for the Search Subdomain team. This team offers a personalised, efficient search experience, enabling members to express their needs in their own words (or images) and retrieve and rank the most relevant matches available for purchase. In addition, the team owns a solution that controls international connections and item visibility.

Our team consists of all roles required to fulfil our area’s development needs: multiple backend engineers, iOS, WEB, Android, test automation engineers, decision- and data scientists, a designer and a product manager. 

In this position, you’ll 

  • Execute, help set or challenge the technical direction of the backend engineering team, including code, architecture, and system design reviews
  • Oversee the design and implementation of scalable, reliable, and secure backend systems to ensure efficient search mechanisms and ranking of the results
  • Implement and shape features that positively impact our 80+ million users. Code changes are rolled out instantly to production
  • Monitor and improve backend service performance and stability. The team owns and monitors service layer measurements (SLI, SLO, etc.) and has an on-call rotation. You would be a part of it
  • Lead domain and cross-domain level initiatives spanning multiple teams within the organisation
  • Work closely with engineering and product managers, frontend engineers, analytics, and other stakeholders, facilitating clear communication within the team and across domains
  • Contribute to roadmap planning, align technical strategy with business objectives, and provide insights on technical feasibility, risks, and resource requirements

About you 

  • You have solid experience in backend engineering with expertise in scalable and reliable system design 
  • You are proficient in object-oriented programming. We mostly use Go, Ruby, and Python but knowing these specific languages is not a hard requirement
  • Experience with event streaming platforms like Kafka, Apache Flink or others for real-time data processing and message queuing
  • Strong understanding of continuous integration and deployment pipelines, with experience in tools like Jenkins for automating builds and deployments
  • A track record working with search engines like Vespa, Elastic Search, or others would be a big advantage. If not, you must have a strong willingness and motivation to learn
  • Experience with observability and monitoring tools. We use Datadog, Grafana, Kibana and other
  • Experience with working on relational and in-memory databases. We use MySql and Redis
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with teams across domains
  • Excellent written and spoken English
