Brief info about Vinted

Our mission is to make second-hand the first choice, and we're looking for people who want to help us get there. Every day, we work together to help our members buy and sell pre-loved clothing and lifestyle items, giving each piece a second life – or even a third.
The Vinted Group is made up of three business units that support this mission:

Vinted Marketplace is Europe’s leading platform for second-hand fashion and a go-to destination for all kinds of pre-loved items, with a growing range of categories. Our platform connects millions of members across 20+ markets, helping great items find a new life.

Vinted Go enhances the shipping experience with a vast network of over 500,000 pick-up and drop-off points, partnering with more than 60 carriers across Europe, with added services like item verification for peace of mind on high-value pieces.

Vinted Pay is the newest part of the Vinted Group, dedicated to bringing secure, reliable payments to buyers and sellers across Europe. Seamlessly integrated into the Vinted app, it helps keep every transaction safe, efficient, and easy for our members.

Founded in 2008 in Lithuania, Vinted began as a way for friends to find new homes for clothes they no longer needed. In 2019, we became Lithuania's first unicorn! Today, our headquarters remain in Vilnius, and we've grown with offices across Europe, supported by a team of over 2,000 people. Our backers include Accel, EQT Growth, Insight Partners, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Sprints, and TPG.

Information about the position

As a Data Scientist at Vinted Go, you will join the Data team at the heart of building the in-house logistics carrier of Vinted. You’ll collaborate closely with a team of 20+ Data colleagues to develop and deploy machine learning, optimisation and simulation applications that directly power Vinted Go Carrier Product and Operations.

In this role you will work on a project basis across multiple Vinted Go Carrier product and operations teams - embedding with one or two teams at a time to deliver data science solutions, and rotating to new teams as projects conclude. Over time, you may support several teams in parallel, maintaining and extending the models you have helped put into production.

You will tackle a broad range of high-impact logistics and transportation data science problems, such as driver routing, warehouse simulations, network capacity, robotics optimisation, predictive maintenance, etc. A first set of data science models is already live across Vinted Go Carrier, and part of your work will be to maintain and improve them (there are some concrete ideas for where to take them next but also open to your perspective and where you will take it) alongside building new solutions from scratch. You will own well-defined problems end-to-end (from scoping through to implementation) with guidance from senior data scientists and tech leads on determining the right approach, while executing independently once the approach has been agreed.

We strongly believe that we are not in the business of building models for their own sake - we are in the business of moving millions of Vinted parcels reliably, efficiently, and at scale to help deliver our mission: to make second-hand the first choice. You will sit at the intersection of machine learning, engineering, product and operations, building solutions that show up in what drivers do each day, how warehouses plan their shifts, and how quickly Vinted members receive their orders.

At Vinted, we have three distinct roles within DSA. We believe each role can make a similar business impact in different ways, and therefore our salary ranges are the same for all three roles. To understand your role within DSA context better, here are brief descriptions of each role we have in the department:

  • Analytics Engineers are responsible for data curation – translating data needs from stakeholders into architecting, building and maintaining efficient & reliable data models and pipelines.
  • Decision Scientists are responsible for actionable insights, identifying and sizing opportunities, and automated tools that increase the quality of product and business decisions by applying statistical methods and data-driven decision-making.
  • Data Scientists are responsible for identifying algorithmic opportunities, ensuring those opportunities are addressed optimally, and designing, developing, and maintaining production-grade statistical and machine learning algorithms.

In this position, you’ll

  • Partner with Product, Engineering, Operations, and senior Data Scientists to deliver machine learning, optimisation and simulation solutions that help scale Vinted Go Carrier
  • Work with different Vinted Go Carrier product and operations teams on a project basis - rotating as projects complete, and supporting multiple teams in parallel once several of the models you have implemented are live in production
  • Design and implement end-to-end data science models focusing on logistics and transportation applications, moving from scoping to proof of concepts and production-grade solutions, with input from senior colleagues on shaping the right approach
  • Maintain and improve data science models that are already live in production across Vinted Go Carrier - iterating on existing ideas we have in the backlog, addressing technical debt, and keeping them reliable as the business evolves
  • Work with Decision Scientists to conduct experiments on new machine learning features or data science models, both offline and through A/B tests
  • Partner with Engineers and Data Platform on the operationalisation of the data science products leveraging a modern tech stack including an in-house machine learning platform, Google Cloud Platform, Python, and dbt
  • Partner with Product and Operations on the estimation of opportunity sizes for data science initiatives within your projects
  • Share learnings and reusable components across the teams you support, contributing to the wider Vinted Go Carrier data science practice

About you

  • Previous experience as a data scientist or in a similar role and have a strong technical background through a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • Solid hands-on experience developing and productionising data science algorithms; you can independently apply machine learning, optimisation, or simulation techniques of medium complexity, and tackle more complex work with support from senior colleagues
  • Proficient in Python and SQL; you write modular, maintainable and reliable code that follows accepted best practices
  • You understand that behind every route is a driver and behind every forecast is a warehouse team planning their shift - you care about whether your model’s recommendation actually works on the ground, not just whether the metric improved offline
  • You are an effective communicator: you can clearly and persuasively explain complex technical concepts and their business implications to peers and non-data stakeholders
  • Able to own well-defined data science problems end-to-end - from scoping through to implementation and monitoring - with some support on determining the right approach, then executing independently
  • Able to break down problems into manageable pieces and estimate how long a task will take, conveying estimates proactively to stakeholders who are likely to be affected
  • A proactive team player who recognises when their work touches other teams or domains and aligns cross-functionally, keeping the company goals in mind
  • Open to feedback and keen to learn - you pick up new techniques quickly and put them into practice, and you actively identify areas for your own development
  • Fluent written and spoken English
